Welcome to the the Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses in Cambridge

We are a dedicated team of volunteers, who have been running Maths Masterclasses since 1982. Our aim is to introduce selected Year 8 students to the wider mathematical landscape, through investigations, challenging problems and hands-on activities - to give them a taste of maths as it is not taught in school. Maths Masterclasses are held on Saturday mornings during term time, from September to February each year, and are held on campus at the University of Cambridge.  Attendance is by invitation, with maths teachers from schools across the region nominating their most talented and committed Year 8 students, and thanks to the generous support of our sponsors, is free of charge. Our organisers are people who are passionate about education, and our speakers are eminent mathematicians, teachers and university lecturers, who enjoy the opportunity to bring advanced maths to bright, enquiring minds.

Testimonials

I would recommend the Masterclasses to anyone and everyone. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to grasp and yes,it is worth waking up at 8 in the morning and then later that day getting dragged around the shopping centre. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity.

Bradley

The first part of the session was an exciting, fast paced competition in which you worked on your table in a team (team names were mathematicians some of which were unknown - Alan Turing), competed with each other to earn as many points as possible!

Annie and Karis

I really enjoyed the Ri Maths Masterclasses and found them very interesting. I made many new friends and it was extremely fun !! All of the teachers were nice, helpful and have shown me how to see maths in a new way. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity.
